La Grande girls hand Ontario 4-1 loss

 by Brad Mosher/The Observer

The La Grande pack of Lady Tigers handed Ontario’s Tigers a 4-1 loss Friday at the Eastern Oregon University tennis courts.

Kata Sebastian-Azola rallied to win the first singles match in three sets over Ontario’s Megan Sokulik. The La Grande senior lost the first set, 7-6, then came back with 6-4 and 6-0 wins.

Ashley Orton grabbed a two-set (6-3, 6-4) win over Ontario’s Kaite Phelps in second singles, while La Grande’s Katie Aldrich needed three sets to give the local Tigers a 3-0 sweep of singles Friday.

After dropping the first set (3-6), she rebounded with 6-4 and 6-2 wins.

In the doubles, Anna Grigsby and Lauren Mills won a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Ontario’s top doubles team.

Ontario picked up its only victory when
La Grande’s Alina Clemens and Averya Stanton dropped a two-set decision (0-6, 2-6) to the visitors.

Boys fall in 5-0 sweep

In the boys competition at La Grande High School, it was the visiting Tigers that swept through for a 5-0 victory.

“We’re really young out there. We have some out there who only picked up a racket about eight days ago,” said La Grande’s Mike Schireman as he watched his team play from courtside.

La Grande’s Tanner Willson dropped a two-set decision to Ontario’s top singles player, Valentin Morales.

Sage Nakamura of Ontario handed freshman Josh Ebel a 6-2, 6-0 loss in the second singles, while Levi Lewis gave Ontario a sweep of singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Sheylan Sands.

In doubles, Ontario’s Quincy Sullivan and Bill Garcia handed Derek Yohannen and Caleb Owens of la Grande a 6-0, 6-3 loss.

In the second doubles, Ontario made it a sweep with Alex Gallegos and Kaleb Price’s win over
La Grande’s Josh Ebel and Wyatt Schlaht.

Ebel and Schlaht won the first set, 7-5, then dropped the final two sets by 4-6 and 2-6 scores.
