La Grande girls tie Mac-Hi, boys lose

MILTON-FREEWATER —The La Grande girls soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Mac-Hi Thursday. Both teams played tough defense and never really got the offense going in this one. The Tigers came into the game relatively healthy, something they haven’t done in recent games. Head coach Elena Nightingale said she was pleased for the most part with her teams performance. “It was nice to have everyone back, but I don’t think we were in as good of shape conditioning wise because of the injuries,” she said. Esa Grigsby scored the lone Tigers goal in the first half off an assist by Samantha Densmore. Other than that goal, the offense was slowed by the Mac-Hi defense.“It was a tough game,” Nightingale said. “We would have liked to pull out the win, but at least we didn’t lose. I think the girls played hard.” Shelby Miller was back in goal for La Grande, and blocked everything that came her way except for the one that slipped by. “I think Shelby did a good job in the net. The one that got by was just a good shot by Mac-Hi and would have gotten by anyone.”
LHS has prided themselves on defense all season long. But Thursday at Mac-Hi, the Pioneers were able to down La Grande 5-1. “I thought it was a really even match,” Tigers’ head coach Dan Mielke said. “Even though the score may not show it, we played well.” The Pioneers struck first, taking the early lead. Then Ryan Warren was able to find Bradley Thompson in space. Thompson then beat his man for a one-on-one with the goalie and put it in the net to tie the game. “It was a nice goal,” Mielke said. “Brad beat their defense and got us back in the match.” That was all the offense La Grande would muster for the game, however, as Mac-Hi piled on four goals in the second half to take the match. “Our defense played pretty tight. The goals that Mac-Hi scored were just really good shots and there wasn’t much we could do about them,” Mielke said. La Grande now has a week off before they travel to Ontario for a game with the Tigers at 6 p.m. Mountain Time Thursday.
