La Grande junior Grigsby named to all-state first team
The awards kept rolling out for the La Grande volleyball team Thursday. Junior Anna Grigsby was named to the Class 4A all-state first team.
“It’s awesome,” Tigers head coach Melinda Becker-Bisenius said. “She’s only a junior, so it’s a very nice honor.”
The honor may be more of a surprise with the way the La Grande season finished.
The Tigers dropped the opening match at the state tournament to No. 3 seed Hidden Valley in five sets.
It’s the second straight season that the Tigers fell in the first round in five.
La Grande was knocked out of the tournament by the eventual consolation champion Ridgeview in four sets.
Grigsby helped lead the Tigers to an 18-5 season. La Grande swept through the Greater Oregon League schedule for the third straight season.
Crook County’s Hannah Troutman was named the Class 4A Player of the Year.
Troutman and the Cowgirls won the state title in straight sets against Cascade.
Cristina Williams of Cascade was named Class 4A Coach of the Year.
La Grande was given the Sportsmanship Award for the Class 4A tournament.
Earlier, La Grande swept through the GOL awards.
Grigsby was named Player of the Year.
Becker-Bisenius was tabbed as Coach of the Year for the GOL.
Grigsby was one of three Tigers named to the first team.
Senior Kendall Kirkland and junior Cassandra Brownell were selected to the first team.
Juniors Hanna Cashell and Brandy Blackman were named to the all-league second team.
Senior Cassidy Crites was an honorable mention selection.
The Tigers lose four seniors from this year’s team.
Along with Kirkland and Crites, Lilly Page and Shana Holpuch will graduate this year.
La Grande will return a strong core of players to make another run at the GOL title, and state berth led by Grigsby.
Offensively, Brown, Cashell and sophomore Avery Albrecht all return, and saw a lot of action on the floor.
Defensively, Blackman will led the charge in the back row.
