La Grande nabs pair of victories

 MILTON-FREEWATER — The La Grande softball team wrapped up the McLoughlin Tournament with a pair of victories on Friday. The Lady Tigers defeated Scappoose, 9-8, before holding off Yamhill-Carlton 6-3.

“It was a great day,” LHS head coach Kevin Kohr said. “We played some really good softball.”

Against Scappoose, La Grande trailed 5-4 heading to the sixth inning. But in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Tigers struck for three runs to go up 7-5. The Indians regained the lead in the top of the seventh with three runs, but LHS won the game on an Auslin McDaniel two-run double in the bottom of the seventh.

“We started out shaky but battled back,” Kohr said. “We never got down.”

Kali Avila started the game and went five innings, but Emily Lawrence picked up the win in relief.  

Olivia Trotter had a three-run double in the game, while Madison Elliott had a three-run triple. She finished the game with a double, triple and three RBIs.

“We hit from top-to-bottom. The lineup produced,” Kohr said.

La Grande never trailed in the second game, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Yamhill-Carlton tied the game in the fourth, but the Lady Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back.

Marissa Carson got the win before being pulled in the second inning. Mattie Spencer pitched the rest of the game.

Elliott added four more RBIs, while Denise Comfort finished with two hits. Elyse Humphreys scored two runs on a bunt single in the fourth inning.

“The girls are playing solid ball,” Kohr said.

La Grande (3-2) will open Greater Oregon League play Tuesday with a doubleheader against McLoughlin (9-3). First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
