La Grande opens with a pair of wins
PENDLETON — The Tigers win Wednesday signified everything that head coach Melinda Becker-Bisenius loves about her team.
Despite an injury, the La Grande volleyball team swept Pendleton 25-19, 25-17 and 25-22. It was the second win of the week for the Tigers.
“Pendleton is a good team with a big block,” Becker-Bisenius said. “They were a Top-8 team last season, so this is a great win.
“It’s tough that we had someone go down during the match, but the bench did just what we hope for. Addy Hagerman came off the bench and did an amazing job. She was digging the ball in the back row, and really helping us control the tempo. We needed that kind of an effort tonight from the bench.”
The sweep didn’t look evident from the start of the match. Pendleton came out to defend its home court.
“We got down in the first set,” Becker-Bisenius said. “But the girls came back and didn’t get rattled. As a coach you love to see that early in the season.”
Kendall Kirkland finished with two kills, 12 assists and seven digs.
Cassie Brownwell collected seven kills and eight digs. Hanna Cashell had seven digs and two kills.
The Tigers also picked up a win against Hermiston in four sets Tuesday. La Grande dropped the opening set 25-17, and then came back to win three straight, 25-17, 25-21 and 26-24.
Pendleton will come over the hill for a match at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
