La Grande soccer teams end regular season in the snow

BAKER — The La Grande girls soccer team finished the regular season with a 2-0 win against Baker Thursday. With snow falling all game long, it made for an interesting environment for soccer. “I think we’ll remember this one for a while,” La Grande head coach Elena Nightingale said. “The ball really wasn’t responding like it should with the snow on the field, but the girls played well.” Esa Grigsby scored her second goal in as many games to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Then in the second half Samantha Densmore added one more to the scoreboard for LHS.With the win the Tigers sealed up third place in the league. La Grande still has a chance at second place if Baker beats Riverside Saturday. If LHS remains in third place, then the Tigers would travel to Southern Oregon for a playoff game Nov. 7. A second place finish for La Grande would mean a home playoff game.
Tigers blow past BakerBAKER — Soccer normally isn’t a winter sport. Not in these parts anyway. But the way the La Grande boys soccer team played Thursday against Baker, the Tigers might take a snowy field every time. La Grande blew out the Bulldogs 8-1 in the final game of regular season play. “It was a challenging endeavor,” LHS head coach Dan Mielke said with a laugh. “The weather really made it an interesting game.” The Tigers scored three goals in the first half, then exploded for five in the second. Tanner Greene, Edgar Arceo and Ryan Warren all scored two goals apiece. Francisco Hernandez and Bradley Thomson added one goal apiece. The Tigers finished the season in second place, and will host a playoff game Nov. 7 against the third place team in the Cowapa League.
