La Grande softball falls short at Hermiston — twice

HERMISTON — La Grande traveled to Hermiston Wednesday, only to lose two contests to different opponents.

Hermiston got the better of the Tigers, 7-2 in the opening game, then Walla Walla did, too, 10-0 in five innings.

Tigers coach Kevin Kohr rested some injured players, and gave starter Boo Christman the day off from throwing off the mound, considering two big games lie ahead at Mac-Hi at 1 p.m. Saturday. But despite the losses, pitchers Shayle Powers and Shelby Hasse pitched well.

Against Walla Walla, the Tigers were victims of starter Kaela DeBroeck, who gave up just two hits.

“She flat brought it,” Kohr said. “She had good control. She’s the real deal.”

In the third inning, back-to-back errors and a walk, followed by Walla Walla stringing a slew of hits together put the game out of reach.

“They found the holes on some of their hits,” Kohr said. “They sprayed the ball around.

“We just didn’t have our bats today.”

But they had good pitching performances from Hasse and Powers. Both kept the ball down. Both did a good job on the mound.

“We just didn’t play good, solid defense,” Kohr said. “It seemed like every time we had an error, it was at a crucial time.”

But it can be corrected today and Friday in practice, leading to the showdown at Mac-Hi.

“If we win both on Saturday, we’re in for sure,” Kohr said. “That’s the ticket.

“We can’t really rely on anyone else besides ourselves.

“They know what they need to do. They know they weren’t quite focused (Wednesday.)

“It will all change come Saturday.”
