La Grande swimmers win 19 events at Baker Invitational

BAKER CITY — What was supposed to be a four-way swim meet Saturday in Baker City turned out to be a two-team duel between
La Grande and Baker.

With the eastbound lanes on I-84 closed, Pendleton and Hermiston were unable to make the trip, leaving the Tigers and Bulldogs alone to tangle in the pool.

But when it was all said and done, LHS won 19 of the 21 events to take both team titles.

“We have a really young team this year with only one senior (Amber Mullarkey),” coach Darren Dutto said.

“The young swimmers did very well. I am very pleased with our progress. Our girls team has quite a bit of depth, and that is going to be very key in our success this season.”

Becca Haynes won the 200 freestyle (2:10.69), 100 backstroke (1:05.18) and teamed up with Hannah Roberts, Abbey Felley and Shelby Baker to take first in the 200 medley relay (2:03.90).

Felley won the 200 individual medley (2:31.83) and the 500 freestyle (5:54.66), while Baker swam to first place in both the 50 freestyle (26.68) and 100 freestyle (59.46).

Amber Mullarkey won the 100 butterfly (1:16.65), and Moriah Brown took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.45).

Haynes, Felley, Roberts and Kenzie O’Rourke teamed up for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:11.01.

On the boys side, Bryce Ebel outraced the competition in the 50 freestyle (23.95) and the 100 butterfly (56.19), while Josh Ebel won the 200 individual medley (2:17.26) and the 100 breaststroke (1:11.11).

Keegan Dutto swam to first in the 200 freestyle (2:12.71) and the 500 freestyle (5:51.15), and Emmit Ambert won the 100 freestyle (1:00.95).

Dean Ricker joined Josh Ebel, Bryce Ebel and Ambert for first place in the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.00), while Dutto, Ricker, Ambert and Bryce Ebel took first in the 200 medley relay (2:01.25).

Nine La Grande swimmers posted lifetime best times this weekend.

The Tigers will host their annual swim meet Saturday at Veterans Memorial swimming pool.

The action is set to start at noon.

“I am really looking forward to our home meet this weekend, which will allow us to showcase our young talent for a home crowd,” Coach Dutto said.
