La Grande takes home title
The La Grande 14-and-under baseball team spent its Sunday at the Roaring Springs waterpark in the Boise, Idaho, area.
It was a well-deserved reward after a decisive weekend on the diamond.
La Grande swept through the Meridian Dairy Days Invitational youth baseball tournament, winning all four games to claim the championship.
The championship game against the Kimberly, Idaho, Bulldogs on Saturday provided little drama, with La Grande trouncing the Bulldogs, 10-1. Caleb Lathrop picked up the win as the starting pitcher, going 2-1/3 innings. Cody DuBray and Bryant Gerdes relieved Lathrop and pitched in relief before closer Andrew Peasely entered the game in the sixth.
Peasely retired four batters in the sixth and seventh innings on strikeouts and picked off a runner he had walked in the final frame to seal the nine-run victory.
La Grande also enjoyed solid performances from its pitchers during the semifinal game Saturday. G.T. Blackman threw the first two innings, while Logan Atkinson pitched the third and fourth, and Peasely earned the save over the final two innings, striking out in the side in the sixth to complete a 12-2 win with the 10-run rule over the Eagle, Idaho, Diamondbacks.
“We had strong pitching performances by everybody that threw for us,” La Grande head coach Lee Atkinson said. “The kids only gave up 10 runs in the four games we played.”
La Grande’s 22 runs in the Saturday single-elimination portion gave those pitchers’ solid cushions, as the team hit well up and down the lineup.
