BURNS –– The La Grande girls basketball team (11-5 overall, 3-0 GOL) beat the Burns (13-7 overall, 1-3 EOL) in a non-league game 60-59 Saturday.

The Tigers’ defense was slow coming out allowing the Highlanders to end the first quarter with a 13-point lead. La Grande made some adjustments and started to close the deficit, but Burns pulled away again in the last two minutes of the second with an eight-point run, ending the first half leading 35-22.

Coach Doug Girdner used halftime to rally his team’s unity and they attacked a lot harder.

“It was good to see them never give up,” Girdner said.

The Tigers came out in the fourth quarter and played defense, keeping victory in a tense game within their reach. La Grande  finally pulled ahead late in the fourth quarter.

Kylin Collman led La Grande with 17 points. Avery Albrecht finished with 15 points. Auslin McDaniel-Perrin added 12 points.

Girdner said he was proud of McDaniel-Perrin’s work in the post helping make the Tiger’s offense happen.

La Grande beat Ontario in a Greater Oregon League matchup 56-44 Friday.

For La Grande, Albrecht scored a game-high 19 points, making 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. McDaniel-Perrin finished with 15 points, while Collman added 14 points.

Ontario’s Riley Helmick finished with 15 points, while Cheye Anderson added nine points. Rylee Salutregui scored five points.
