La Grande’s Yundt earns pitching award at Class 4A All-Star Series

A week after Josh Yundt’s high school baseball season ended, he got a reprieve.

Yundt was invited to the Class 4A All-Star series in Roseburg.

“It was pretty exciting to find out that I was selected for that,” Yundt said. “I knew there were going to be some great players there, and it was going to be a chance to compete against them.”

He had to endure two games before finally stepping on the mound.

The North won the opening game Saturday. However, the South countered with an 11-9 victory in Game 2, Sunday.

The whole experience had a different feeling for Yundt.

“It was odd not starting a game on the mound. I had to get into a different mindset. You get to hang out, and then go into the bullpen while the game is going on. It’s a totally different perspective.”

When Yundt did come on in relief, he featured the same fastball and curveball that helped the Tigers advance past La Salle in the state playoffs this season.

He pitched 3 2/3 innings, while giving up two runs on five hits. Yundt struck out two batters.

For his efforts, he was named Most Outstanding Pitcher for the South team.

“It’s a great honor,” Yundt said. “There are so many great athletes in the line-up, that you have to be on as a pitcher.

“My fastball had a little extra pop. Plus, I had good control of my curveball. That really helped out.

“It’s a great experience. All the hitters at the next level are going to at least be this good.”

Yundt is leaning toward attending Walla Walla Community College this fall.
