ATHENA — The Union/Cove softball team split with Weston-McEwen Friday in a non-league doubleheader.
The Lady Cats took the opener 9-4, but fell in the second game 7-5.
“We played some good ball. Weston is a really good team. They’re probably a top-10 team in the state,” Union/Cove head coach Paul Phillips said.
In Game 1, the Lady Cats rode a stellar pitching performance by Dani Sturm.
Sturm went seven innings, struck out six and allowed five hits in the win.
She also was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles at the plate, while Jaiden Wright was 3-for-4 with a triple, double and a single.
Keesha Sarman was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
“That was a great game for us,” Phillips said.
But Union/Cove couldn’t keep it going in Game 2, falling behind 6-3 after the fourth inning and was never able to catch up.
“We were consistently behind in the count that game,” Phillips said. “We just didn’t adjust to the umpire’s zone, so we’re always battling from behind.”
Union/Cove finished with six hits, while Weston-McEwen had four.
Sarman was 2-for-4, while Carsyn Roberts was 1-for-4.
The Lady Cats had a field day on the base paths, finishing 12-for-12 on stolen bases.
Union/Cove will compete at the Irrigon Spring Break Bash starting today.
