Lady Cats sweep through Enterprise, Heppner; Elgin falls

HEPPNER — The Union High School volleyball team added two more victims to its season total this weekend.

HEPPNER — The Union High School volleyball team added two more victims to its season total this weekend.

The Lady Cats swept Enterprise (25-16, 25-8, 25-11) and Heppner (28-26, 25-23, 25-11) to improve 3-1 in the Blue Mountain Conference.

“I’m extremely pleased with how we played this weekend,” coach Mendy Clark said.

Against the Outlaws, Union flexed its muscle early and never let Enterprise get going.

EHS was without Elsa Steen, and Union had two players sitting out.

Bayly Poor was 100 percent hitting with 10 kills, while Kelsey Walenta had eight kills.

Maddie Martens added four blocks.

As a team, the Lady Cats finished with 37 kills and 13 serving aces.

“They (Union) jumped out on top and we struggled with every aspect of the game until freshman Andrea Butterfield got a monster block, and Hayley Riggs got several ace serves in a row,” Enterprise coach Lil Conrad said.

“The spark was lit and they started playing the game the way it is supposed to be played, but it was too late in the game to come back.”

Union had a bit more of a struggle against the Mustangs.

Clark said her team went point for point against Heppner, with neither team seizing momentum.

But it was the Lady Cats who were able to close out each game strong, putting a cap on a successful weekend.

Keesha Sarman had eight digs, while Poor had 11 kills and six blocks. Dani Sturm had six kills and Viki McCabe had seven blocks.

“Our serve-receive saved us in that match,” Clark said.

Clark added that Sarah Good stepped up big in her first varsity match for Union.

The Lady Cats had 12 serving aces and eight missed serves.

“The girls played the most unselfishly this weekend. Everyone gave up something, and that’s why we had success,” Clark said.

Union will travel to play Pilot Rock Thursday at 5 p.m.

Outlaws nipped by Mustangs

Enterprise lost its other match of the weekend to Heppner in three games.

The Outlaws lost 25-14, 25-12 and 25-17.

“We started off really well against Heppner,” Conrad said.

“We matched point for point until they pulled away a few points and we seemed to hit the wall like we have so many times before. Until we truly believe we are a good team this is going to continue to happen.”

Kylie Willis, McKenna Miller, Carsen Sajonia and Hayley Riggs all had three kills.

Riggs added six digs and Sajonia had four.

“We did have moments of brilliance, with Carsen Sojonia’s digging,  McKenna Miller’s hitting, Stephanie Simpson’s and Kylie Willis’ serve receiving.

“And Ashtin Olsen coming off of the bench to serve some crucial points,  along with Andrea and Hayley’s net play.  We just have to have the moments last a little longer,” Conrad said.

Enterprise (5-6, 2-3) will host Weston-McEwen Thursday.

Huskies drop pair

STANFIELD — Elgin lost a pair of Blue Mountain Conference games this weekend, but the young Lady Huskies managed to win their first two sets of the season.

Elgin was swept by Stanfield (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) Friday, but fought to five games in a loss to Pilot Rock (14-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 6-15).

“The girls didn’t have the same gumption as they did against Enterprise (Thursday),” coach Emily Sorensen said.

“We’re still working on finding a cohesive lineup that works together.”

Elgin is 0-12 overall and sits at 0-5 in the BMC.

The Lady Huskies host Irrigon and Union on Saturday.

Panthers bounce back

IMBLER  — The Lady Panthers bounced back from a four-game loss to Powder Valley Thursday to defeat Pine Eagle 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-8) Friday.

Jacey Teeter had 15 assists and five digs for Imber, while Malia Mills had 12 digs and 10 kills.

Danika McIntosh added six kills.

Imbler improves to 11-2 overall and is 2-1 in the Old Oregon League.

Powder Valley also swept Pine Eagle (25-12, 25-17, 25-21) to improve to 3-0 in league and 10-2 overall.

The Lady Panthers are ranked No. 8 in the OSAA poll, while the Badgers are No. 2.

Imbler travels to play at Stanfield Tuesday and hosts Cove Thursday.

The Lady Badgers are at Wallowa Thursday before a rematch with Imbler Friday.
