Lady Tigers hold off rival Baker in four-set victory

BAKER CITY — The La Grande High School volleyball team lost its first set in Greater Oregon League play in over a year Thursday night.

But the outcome of the match was no different than it’s been the previous 10 times the Lady Tigers have played a GOL contest.

LHS defeated rival Baker 3-1 (25-9, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24) to improve to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in league play.

LHS moved to No. 6 in the OSAA rankings with the win.

“Baker played us tough. We had a lot of unforced errors, and our serve-receive wasn’t as sharp as it’s been,” coach Melinda Becker said.

“But it was good for us to be challenged. I think the kids thought it was going to be easy.

“It’s great for us to be able to pull it out.”

La Grande was able to dig itself out of early holes in Games 3 and 4, according to Becker.

Denise Comfort had 14 kills, while Olivia Trotter had eight kills and nine digs.

Madison Elliott had 17 assists, nine digs and four kills.

Hanna Cashell was 10 for 11 serving with three aces and added eight digs.

Breanna Partney had five kills and four digs, while Anneleise Wiseman finished with four kills.

Lauren Mills had six kills and was 100 percent serving.

“Mills had some really great serves for us in Game 4,” Becker said.

Becker also lauded the defensive play by Wiseman, Cashell and Elliott.

With the loss, Baker drops to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in the GOL.

La Grande will compete in the Seaside Tournament this weekend.

Becker said the Lady Tigers are in a pool with No. 7 Astoria, Seaside, North Marion and Newport.

“We looking forward to it. It’s going to be a good challenge for us.”
