Lady Tigers steal gold from Pirates in Vale

VALE — The La Grande girls track team won the Oregon Trail Invitational crown Friday at Vale High School, edging Idaho’s Payette Pirates.

Led by a pair of victories from sophomore Amanda Welch in the 1,500 meters and the 3,000 meters, the Lady Tigers also got individual wins from Lexus Miller-Moylan and Jasmine Smith to help score 105 points.

The Lady Pirates from Idaho finished the meet with 99.5 points for second place. Vale was third with 85.5 points, while Crook County had 80 points. Weiser, Idaho, scored 48 points for fifth in the 16-team field. Ontario came in seventh with 30 points, while Baker took 11th with 20 points.

Welch led teammate Rose Winters to a one-two scoring punch in the 1,500 meters. The sophomore won the race in 5 minutes, 23.60 seconds, while Winters was a few steps back, finishing in 5:24.96.

The Tigers duplicated that finish in the 3,000 meters, with Welch crossing the line in 12:06.57, followed by Winters in second with a time of 12:19.10.

Lexus Miller-Moylan jumped into the middle of the state’s 4A crowd in the 400 meters when she won at Vale in 1:02.26. That time was good enough to put the sophomore from
La Grande seventh among the rest of the 4A runners in Oregon.

Jasmine Smith won the 800 meters in 2:39.20, then finished third in the triple jump (34-5 1/2) and helped the Tigers take second in the 1,600-meter relay (4:27.20) with Ally Tsiatsos, Erin Bodfish and Miller-Moylan.

Tsiatsos and Miller-Moylan joined with Amy Hickey and Alora Brown to take third in the 400-meter relay in 53.48 seconds.
