League leaders: La Grande lights up Ontario

ONTARIO — The No. 1 team in the state continued its roll Friday with the La Grande girls soccer team grabbing a 8-0-0 Greater Oregon League win at Ontario.

LHS is now one win from a perfect regular season. La Grande improved to 5-0-0 in league play and 12-0-0 overall.

Seniors Haley White got things going early connecting on the first two goals of the game.

White was assisted by Clara Gandy on the first and put a pass from Jasmine Smith into the net for her second goal.

White finished with four goals.

Lexus Miller-Moylan capped the first half scoring off a pass from White in the 29th minute.

LHS went on to outscore Ontario 5-0 in the second half, giving goalkeeper Auslin McDaniel-Perrin her 11th shutout of the season.

Smith, Erin Bodfish and Lacey Miles each scored a goal in the second half.

Ontario fell to 1-3-0 in the GOL and 5-5-1 overall with the loss.

La Grande will close out the regular season against Baker at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Tigers notch
big league win

ONTARIO — Better late than never is the approach La Grande co-head coach Wade Wright is taking after his team picked up a momentum-building 2-1 Greater Oregon League win against Ontario Friday.

“This is what co-head coach Jessy (Watson) and I have been hoping to see all season, Wright said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team. It’s the most complete team half we’ve played all season in the second half.”

Wright said the team came out sluggish in the first half.

La Grande trailed 1-0 at halftime.

Freshman Lewis Wright broke the ice for the visting team off a corner kick by heading the ball into the net.

“That was a big turning point for us,” Wade Wright said. “It seemed to give the team more life. From that point on, we pressured better and went harder after balls we thought we could win.”

Wright scored his second goal of the game in the 86th minute to put La Grande on top for good.

LHS improved to 2-3-0 in GOL play and 4-7-0 overall. Ontario dropped to 2-2-0 in the GOL and 6-5-0 overall.

La Grande will wrap up the regular season against Baker at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
