Legacy Ford battles at Walla Walla tourney

WALLA WALLA — Five games, no substitutes and very little rest translated into a sixth -place finish for Legacy Ford at the Walla Walla tournament.

The Mustangs defeated King Nissan Saturday, 9-3, handing the opponent its first loss of the tournament. Kaden Titus earned the win on the mound, while Evan Humphrey and Travis Ludwig each went 3-for-4.

“Kaden pitched really well that game,” Mustangs manager Eric Yundt said. “He kept the ball down, forced them into a lot of ground balls.”

And when there were hard hits off the bat? The infield and outfield backed up their pitcher, making plays, committing zero errors.

Sunday was a different result, as Legacy Ford faced powerhouse Columbia Basin Blue, a team loaded with 17-to 19-year-old kids.

Legacy Ford lost, 16-2, coming out flat after a long weekend with just nine players through the heat and five-game grind.

Playing an experienced team with college talent didn’t help, either.

“I can’t take anything away from Columbia Basin Blue,” Yundt said. “We hit some shots today that I thought would be in the gap and over their heads, and they ran them down and caught them.”

Evan Humphrey continued his hot streak, smacking a home run and capping off a great weekend.

“Just good approaches at the plate,” Yundt said. “Pitchers aren’t really fooling him with much.

“He hit the ball well all weekend long.”

So that’s a sixth place finish out of 14 teams in this tournament. With nine kids everyday, Yundt said he was proud of his team for beating undefeated King Nissan Saturday

“Obviously we would like to do better, but feel pretty good about how we came out of the tournament,” Yundt said.

Legacy Ford will play a

doubleheader Thursday at 5 p.m. at Pendleton.
