American Legion baseball isn’t cheap.
Teams travels hundreds of miles per summer, entering expensive tournaments, and they go through a lot of baseballs.
So a good sponsor is a necessity.
And La Grande has the best Legion sponsor in the state. At least the state commissioners think so.
Because Legacy Ford was recently voted the Single A sponsor of the year for the 2012 season after sponsoring the Legacy Legends last summer.
It’s the first time a La Grande sponsor has earned the award.
“It takes a good sponsor,” Mike Lanman, president of Northeast Oregon baseball, said.
“For a whole season it costs about $11,000 to $12,000. And the sponsor takes care of about 70 percent of that.”
Last season was the first year Legacy was the official sponsor of the team. For a number of years it was Subway who sponsored the team that went by the A’s.
But even when Subway was the sponsor, Legacy still loaned out vehicles for travel.
“Legacy is so supportive. They help with everything. They didn’t charge us at all for the vans,” Lanman said.
Lanman said he would like the partnership with Legacy to continue for the foreseeable future.
And with the success that Legion baseball has had in La Grande in recent years, a steady sponsor will help in taking the team a long way.
