Leopards bounce back against Imbler

COVE — Saturday showcased a little redemption and a little hard luck. The Leopard boys basketball team rebounded from a terrible game Friday to defeat Imbler 57-34. “Our game against Wallowa was in our minds,” Cove senior Scott DelCurto said. “We wanted to come out strong.” DelCurto and Jordan Brown helped Cove rebound in a battle for third place in the Old Oregon League.Imbler’s luck spiraled downward. With a healthy Brian Mills back on the court, senior Dalton McDaniel sat on the bench with sprained ligaments in his right hand. It didn’t get any better from there. Imbler’s first five offensive possessions ended in turnovers. When the Panthers did get shots, they didn’t fall. Teighlor Mesterheide had a shot spin around the rim and stop on the back where the rim attaches to the backboard. “We felt like we left some points out the floor tonight,” Imbler head coach Jarod Teeter said. “We get some of those shots to fall, and we’re right in the game. “Our boys didn’t give up. I thought they came out really strong in the second half.” So did Cove. After weathering Imbler’s push to get back into the game, the Leopards outscored the visitors 20-7 in the final quarter. The Panthers cut the lead to seven points to open the fourth quarter, but Crayson McBride drilled a 3-pointer to spark the final run. McBride scored eight points. Brown finished with 12 points, and DelCurto added nine points. Landen Reddington added eight points off the bench. Andrew Fullerton led Imbler with 12 points, and Bryan Mills added 10 points. Friday, the Panthers defeated Pine Eagle 73-34. Fullerton led the way with 18 points. Jake and Ian McLean added 16 and 10 points, respectively. Cove will close the Old Oregon League schedule against Pine Eagle, and Imbler will travel to Joseph Friday. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m.
