MOUNT BACHELOR — A handful of local skiers traveled to Bend recently to compete in the statewide Special Olympics competition — and they returned with gold, silver and bronze medals for their efforts.
The Union County athletes were among approximately 200 athletes from around the state in the Special Olympics Oregon (SOOR) 2013 Winter State Games.
Nicholas Mendigruen picked up gold in the 500-meter cross country competition and a silver in both the one-kilometer race and the one-kilometer Unified Partner relay.
Lyndal Reed also grabbed some gold near Bend in both the 500-meter and one-kilometer cross country races.
Remy Spangler took a gold in the one-kilometer race and silvers in the three-kilometer race and one-kilometer Unified Partner Relay.
Braden Trice swept up silvers in the 500-meter, one-kilometer and one-kilometer Unified Partner Relay races.
In the Alpine competitions, Mandi Durfee took bronze in the Super G, bronze in the Giant Slalom and a fourth in the slalom.
“Our athletes did pretty well,” Doug Trice, the Union County Special Olympics program coordinator, said.
“There was a lot of sunshine. The athletes performed really well and we were really pleased with the results.”
The Bend area supports the competition really well, Trice added.
“The trails are groomed, they have lunch there and they have a lot of volunteers,” he said. “We have had a really good year.”
Union County volunteers Tina Bowen and Cody Allen picked up silver in the one-kilometer Unified Partner relay event.
Bowen and Allen were competing with Braden Trice and Spangler in the relay, with each running a one-kilometer leg of the four-kilometer race.
The competition also included snowshoe racing and snowboarding, events where Trice hopes to have athletes competing in next spring.
