Local wrestlers set for semifinals

PORTLAND — With the opening day of the Class 4A wrestling tournament in the books, La Grande still has seven wrestlers hoping to bring home a medal.

The Tigers currently sit in four place as a team with 40 points. Crook County closed out the opening day with 180 points, while Henley is in second with 93.

La Grande sent four wrestlers into the quarterfinals at Memorial Coliseum in Portland, with three of them advancing to the semifinals.

 

At 106 pounds, Cole Rohan defeated Izaak Grubbs of Marshfield in the quarterfinals by major decision, 18-4. Rohan defeated North Marion’s Triston Rostocil by fall 1:51 into his opening-round match. The sophomore will face off against Cole Smith of Marshfield in the semifinals.

Senior Ryan Middleton moved into the semifinals with a win by fall against Cody Erhardt of Scappoose. Middleton pinned his opponent 27 seconds into the second round. He picked up a win against Daxten Blackwell of Central in the opening round, recording a pin 1:47 into the match. Middleton will face Lane Stigall of North Marion in the semifinals.

FInally, Caleb Woodworth will represent La Grande in the semifinals at 170 pounds. Woodworth grabbed an 11-3 major decision win against Brydyn Gardner of Cascade. Woodworth, a senior, pinned Aaron Wagner of North Bend/Oregon Coast Technology with 11 seconds left to go in the first round. He will face senior Ismael Rubio of Phoenix in the semifinals.

Preston Armstrong fell in his semifinal match at 160 pounds to Brandon Vega of Phoenix. Vega pinned Armstrong at the 4:21 mark.

Taran Hardick, Jon Gonzalez and Quentin Durfee all fell in the opening round. The three wrestlers bounced back to win a match in the consolation bracket, but then kept the synchronized results going by falling in their next matches.

In 2A/1A action four wrestlers picked up an opening round win to move into the semifinals.

Union/Cove’s Daniel Colton defeated Kyle Bateman of Monroe with 30 seconds left in the second round in the 113 pound weight class. Teammate Chad Witty, 170 pounds, will head to the semifinals after defeating Esteban Gutierrez of Culver 54 seconds into the second round.

Enterprise/Joseph also sent to wrestlers into the semifinals. Matthew Staigle advanced with a win by fall against Calvin Bradberry of Monroe with nine second left in the match. Wyatt Warnock heads to the semifinals with a win by fall against Brennon Mestas of Bonanza. Warnock secured a pin at the 2:56 mark.

Jared Wilcox, 160 pounds, and Daniel Parker, 170 pounds, of Enterprise/Joseph each fell in the opening round, but moved on with a win in the consolation bracket.

Union/Cove’s Josh Devore fell in his first two matches at 113 pounds. The sophomore lost his final match to Shawn Richardson of Oakridge 13-5.

Elgin’s Damian Hernandez, 132 pounds, and Jaydon McKay, 152 pounds, both fell in their opening two matches of the tournament.

Semifinal action will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
