Lutes spoil homecoming

Saturdays football game was one for the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers to forget.
Pacific Lutheran quarterback Tyler Teeple threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more scores in the Lutes 48-18 thumping that spoiled Easterns homecoming.
Im really disappointed, said Eastern coach Rob Cushman. We can play much better than that.
Pacific Lutheran converted two Eastern fumbles into touchdowns. The Mountaineers gave up touchdown passes of 83 and 77 yards. And Eastern (0-4) had eight first half penalties that helped the Lutes build a 34-12 lead.
Were a big play team; we just are, Pacific Lutheran coach Frosty Westering said. Our defense kind of cut them down to where we controlled plays.
Big plays were the name of the game from the start. Teeple directed a five-play, 75-yard drive to open the game and finished it with a 26-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Brown.
Eastern responded by giving the ball to fullback Mike Kyle, who ran 68 yards to score on the Mountaineers first play from scrimmage.
A sign of the game: Eastern kicker Gabe Minthorn missed the extra point, and the Mountaineers couldnt tie the game.
Pacific Lutheran extended its lead three plays later when Teeple hit Brown for an 83-yard score. Aaron Binger had an 11-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to make it 20-6.
Teeple would add a 35-yard scoring pass to Kevin Giboney in the second quarter and a 77-yard touchdown to Todd McDevitt in the fourth.
Those three receivers are good, Cushman said, emphasizing good. Their quarterbacks good. They lost two games they had no business losing.
Pacific Lutheran (2-2) started the season 0-2 before beating Linfield Sept. 29.
Teeple threw for 364 yards on 14-for-24 passing. He was sacked five times by the Mountaineer defense but got a 2-yard run into the end zone in the third quarter and another 1-yarder in the fourth.
Brown had five catches for 133 yards and McDevitt had three receptions for 105 yards.
Eastern was still in the game in the second quarter after Matt Hamlin scored on an 8-yard run. But again, Minthorn missed the extra point and Eastern trailed 20-12. Teeples pass to Giboney and his first touchdown run pretty much put the game out of reach by halftime.
Eastern added an 11-yard touchdown run by Kris Davidson in the third quarter.
Not all was dim for the Mountaineers. Kyle had his second-straight 100-yard rushing game; he finished with 124 yards on 18 carries. Quarterback Mark Hanrahan was 10-for-14 for 107 yards and showed more confidence than he did in the season-opener against Willamette.
Brian Moore had three tackles for losses for the Mountaineers, including two of the sacks. Brock Jorgensen led Eastern with 15 tackles, six of them unassisted.
In the third quarter we played very well on defense, Cushman said.
Eastern returns to action Saturday against Linfield in McMinnville.
