MOMENTUM FAVORS BOBCATS GOING INTO STATE

By Pat Perkins

Observer Staff Writer

The Union Bobcats have momentum going into the start of the OSAA-U.S. Bank State Class 2A Volleyball Championships today.

A pair of wins Saturday at the Wapiti League district tournament gave the Union players confidence.

Theyve practiced well the last couple of days, Union coach Patty Herron said. Two good games at district helped us.

Union (20-5) starts the tournament at 2 p.m. today against Santiam Christian. Wallowa (22-9) will play St. Marys (Medford) at 7 tonight. The tournament is at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Union needed the boost at district. The Bobcats were in first place in the league until the last weekend, when a loss to Wallowa dropped them to second. Union then knocked off Enterprise in three games in the first round and outlasted Imbler in the

championship.

Imbler had upset league champ Wallowa in the first round, leaving the Cougars as the Wapitis second seed at state since they won the league title and were guaranteed a trip to state.

The loss robbed Wallowa of its momentum going into todays match.

Were just going to go down there and do our best, Wallowa coach Terri Wilson said.

The Class 1A tournament joins the court Friday in Monmouth. Cove (25-2) will play Damascus Christian at 5 p.m. and Powder Valley (18-3) will play Days Creek at the same time.

Cove and Powder Valley split their four matches this season, with Cove winning the District 4-1A tournament in three games over the Badgers. Powder Valleys only other loss this season was to Condon, which advanced to the state tournament and could meet Cove in the second round.
