Swirling 15 to 20 mph southwest winds may have given Eastern Oregon Mountaineers kicker Josh Clark more fits than Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks kicker Chad Wurth Saturday at Community Stadium.

Clark missed field goal attempts from 30, 34 and 37 yards. Wurth made three of four kicks — his only miss being a 51-yard attempt. His last boot from 37 yards clinched the game with 5:51 left in the fourth, as the Warhawks won 9-7.

"We were ... just kinda believing in him," Eastern coach Jim Fenwick said about sticking with Clark.

The missed field goals will make Clark a stronger kicker, he said.

Clark has a strong leg, Fenwick said, so the coaching staff had to take advantage of each player's best skills.

The Mountaineers' Damien Johnson stretched for the endzone on a fourth-and-goal for the only touchdown of the game with 7:19 left in the third, putting the Mountaineers ahead 7-6.

Eastern had a chance to stretch its lead moments later, when Mike Askren fumbled on the Warhawks' 41-yard line with 6:48 to go, but the Mountaineers could not take advantage.

The offense stalled at the 21-yard line, and Clark's 34-yard attempt was wide left with 2:33 in the third.

Wurth missed a 51-yard attempt at the 14:16 mark of the fourth, and Eastern had another chance.

The Mountaineers drove down to the 20-yard line, but Clark's 37-yard attempt went wide right with 10:34 left in the game.

The Warhawks then put together an 11-play, 60-yard drive ending with Wurth's game-winning field goal.

Nick Hannah led the Mountaineers with 15 tackles, followed by Thomas Neill (12) and Cam Christensen (10).

The Mountaineers ran for 112 total yards, while the Warhawks had 61. Johnson rushed for 68 yards on 15 carries. Wurth had 50 yards on 21 touches.

Bird was 17 of 37 for 133 yards. The Warhawks' Randy Borgardt was 10 of 19 for 86 yards.

The Mountaineers play at Weber State in Ogden, Utah, Saturday.
