Watching Vanessa Shelton hit the ball in Eastern Oregon University's Tuesday 8-0, 2-0 doubleheader softball sweep of Northwest Nazarene University, it might seem that Shelton's transition from basketball to softball season has been a smooth one.

It might seem that way.

"My feet hurt," Shelton said after the Mountaineers home opener. "It's gonna take awhile to get used to wearing cleats. It'll go away, though."

One thing that's not going to go away is EOU's stifling defense and the added hitting boost of Shelton and fellow newcomer Hannah Shelley.

After Shelton reached base on a leadoff double in the first inning of the opening game and Shannon Rasmussen got on with a walk, Shelley's three-run home run gave the Mountaineers their first runs of the game.

"I told my team before the game that (Eastern) doesn't walk," Northwest Nazarene head coach Julie Coert said. "Anji (Weissenfluh) has an aggressive group and they come out swinging the bat. They're a capable team and we just didn't get the job done."

After Shelley's home run, Eastern added another run in the first.

In the second inning, a Nicole Landstrom single scored Rasmussen and Shelley and a Heather Tandberg triple scored Beth Hull and Landstrom to make the score 8-0.

Northwest Nazarene starting pitcher Trisha DeSimone gave up 10 hits in the first two innings.

"It was nice to start our season out right at home," Shelley said. "If we can keep up our defense and keep hitting the ball we'll be fine."

Shannon Rasmussen pitched in the first game for Eastern, giving up just one hit in five innings before the game was called on account of the mercy rule.

In the nightcap game, Kate Stinnot took the mound for EOU and recorded another shutout, this time in a full seven innings of work.

Eastern (2-3) scored in the bottom of the first on a Beth Hull sacrifice grounder and their other run in the fifth, after Shelton hit a double then scored on a Shelley sacrifice fly.

"I thought we made the routine play tonight defensively," EOU head coach Anji Weissenfluh said. "Nicole Landstrom did a great job defensively and Vanessa hit the heck out of the ball."

Eastern returns to action Mar. 20-24 at the Sunwest Invitational in Orange, Calif., where the Mountaineers will play nine games in five days.
