MUILENBURG TOURNAMENT RETURNS FRIDAY
More than 300 grapplers from 17 high schools from all around Oregon and Idaho are expected to take to the mats at the 15th annual La Grande Breakfast Lions Muilenburg Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday.
Wrestlers from La Grande, Baker, Barlow, Burns, Capital (Idaho), Enterprise, Lewiston, Mac-Hi, Mountain View (Idaho), Pendleton, Powder Valley (a new team), Skyview (Idaho), The Dalles, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa and Weiser, are attending this year's event.
"It is a big one. It's a big tournament," said Fred Arnst, one of the Muilenburg organizers.
The tournament memorializes Brian Muilenburg, who was a district champion wrestler at La Grande High School. He later wrestled at Oregon State University. He died in the early 1980s in a traffic accident.
Part of what makes the tournament special is that many of the out-of-state wrestlers spend the night camping out at the high school.
"One of the neat things for the kids is to go to these kinds of tournaments and meet people from several states," said Arnst.
The event is being sponsored by Boise Cascade Corp. and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The cost is $5 for adults and $4 for students. Wrestling will start at about 3 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.
