Mountaineer men maul Multnomah

The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team started quick in the first half,  building a 28-point halftime lead, en route to beating Multnomah Univserity, 121-89 Saturday. 

The Mountaineers shot 64 percent from the floor in the first half.

Tony Eackles Jr. led the Mountaineers in scoring with 31 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the floor. 

Kyllian Wood followed with 15 points and 15 rebounds, his second double double of the season.

EOU scored the first 14 points of the game, while the Lions went  scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the game. 

EOU continued to dominate and built its lead to 20, 24-4, seven minutes into the contest.

EOU’s shooting cooled off in the second half, but EOU was still able to exptend its lead back to 34 points, 91-57, after a Brady Barrett jumper.

The Mountaineers shot 57.1 percent from the floor, and for the second straight game hit more than 10 three pointers.

On Friday, EOU knocked off 

EOU returns to action next Friday, Nov. 15 when they travel to Caldwell, Idaho to face Walla Walla University in the Golden Rule Shootout.Multnomah 115-105.

Eackles scored a game-high 34 points.

Four seconds into the game Craig Tucker hit a jumper, putting the Mountaineers ahead 2-0. 

After that bucket both teams did not score for two and a half minutes, until Eackles recorded a layup to put the Mountaineers ahead 4-0.

After a Tavin Hurley jumper, EOU found themselves down 19-18. 

The Lions took a six point lead, 25-19, before EOU scored another point. 

The Lions continued to extend their lead to, 30-21, before EOU started to mount a comeback. Eastern Oregon cut the Lions lead to one point 32-31 before Multnomah started to build another lead.

Multnomah built its lead back up to eight points, 39-31, before the Mountaineers started a comeback. 

The Mountaineers took a 41-39 lead after a Kevin Attila three- pointer. Eastern Oregon built a four point lead at halftime, 47-43, after Craig Tucker hit a half-court shot.

After halftime the Mountaineers continued to build on its lead to 18 points, 64-46, on a Kalvin Johanson tip in. EOU continued to extend its lead and it grew to 73-52 after a three-pointer by Deonta Edwards with 14:30 left in the game.

With the Mountaineers ahead by 21, the Lions started to make a comeback. Multnomah started to chip away at the lead and continued to trim it down to as low as 14 points after an Erik Mendoza layup. The Lions were not done and trimmed the Mountaineers lead to nine, 98-89, after a Kristoff Thande free throw.

Multnomah would not go away easily as it found itself down three points, 102-99, after a pair of free throws by Thande. Eastern Oregon answered right back and grew its lead back to as many as 10 points. The Mountaineers claimed the victory 115-105.

 

EOU women fall in exhibition

NAMPA, Idaho — The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team fell in an exhibition, 83-82, to Northwest Nazarene University Friday.

Senior guard Brittney Newcomb led the Mountaineers scoring 38 points. She hit eight three-pointers in the contest. 

Taylor Riley followed with 13 points.

The Mountaineers and Crusaders were locked in a tight game from the start. 

The Crusaders held a small lead, but EOU started to chip away at the lead and trimmed it down to three points, 24-21, after a Newcomb three-pointer. 

However, the Crusaders went on an 8-1 run to take a 32-22 lead.

Eastern Oregon cut the lead to five points after another Newcomb three-pointer to trail 44-39 before halftime.

Northwest Nazarene started the second half by scoring the first five points. 

Eastern Oregon continued to battle. After five straight points for Newcomb and a three-pointer by Maloree Moss, the Mountaineers found themselves down two points, 49-47.

The game went back-and-forth, with the Crusaders building the lead back to double digits.

The Mountaineers answered with an 11-2 run to cut the Crusaders lead to one point, 67-66.

EOU and Northwest Nazarene continued to battle and the game remained close Eastern Oregon trimmed the lead to one point after a three-pointer by Newcomb, 83-82, with a minute left. 

The Mountaineers and Crusaders went scoreless for the remainder of the game and EOU fell, 83-82.

The Mountaineers return to the court Friday when they travel to Redding, Calif., to take part in the Simpson Tournament. 

EOU will face Hope International on Friday with the game starting at 5:30 p.m.
