Mountaineers qualify 2 more for track nationals
MOSCOW, Idaho The Eastern Oregon Mountaineers added two members to their NAIA national indoor track and field team Saturday.
Pat Egelus in the 1,000-meter run and Sean Williams in the 3,000 will race at the national meet after qualifying over the weekend at the McDonalds I meet at the University of Idaho.
Williams ran the race of the day, blistering the field with the second-fastest time in school history, 8 minutes, 34 seconds.
He hasnt run the 3,000 very much, and he took 1:07 off his previous time from a year or two ago, Eastern Oregon coach John Spatz said.
Williams time would have gotten him second place at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York this past weekend.
He just ran a great race. He pushed the pace so hard that he took the lead after a mile. He just jumped in the lead where he knew hed have to run well.
Egelus finished third in the 1,000 in 2:32.18. Teammate Ben Terry beat the NAIA provisional qualifier by finishing fifth in 2:32.94.
It was a good race; there were a lot of people around them, Spatz said.
Eastern weight thrower Leah Merrell, who had already beaten the NAIA qualifier, reached the NCAA Division III national meet qualfier by throwing 52 feet, 101/4 inches. The throw was her second-farthest ever.
Merrell is battling an ankle injury, but in the past she has competed while injured.
She handles it really well in meet situations, Spatz said.
Merrells throw is among the top five nationally in both the NAIA and NCAA Division III. Merrell is a nine-time All-American in indoor and outdoor track and field.
Eastern will try to qualify more athletes to its national team at meets in Moscow this weekend and next.
