Mountaineers sweep Warriors
SALEM — The Eastern Oregon University Volleyball team defeated Corban University in three straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 25-21) Saturday.
The Mountaineers (13-6, 7-4 CCC) made a comeback in the second and third set to win the match over Corban (3-14, 1-10 CCC).
Stefani Sorensen led the Mountaineers with a match high 15 kills with a .409 hitting percentage. Casey Loper added 10 kills with a .393 hitting percentage.
In the opening set the Mountaineers took an early 8-3 lead and never looked back. Corban made a slight run midway through the set, as they cut the led to three, 12-15. A kill by Loper ended the run and the Mountaineers would eventually win the set, 25-21.
The second set went back and forth early on with 12 ties and 7 lead changes. The Warriors would go up late 21-18, which caused Morehead to take a timeout and regroup her team. After the timeout, EOU didn’t allow the Warriors to score again and would end the set with seven unanswered points for a 25-21 victory.
“The girls played well tonight and controlled aspects of the game well,” Eastern Oregon head coach Kaki Morehead said. “It was nice to get back on track tonight and focus on the things we need to do in the games ahead.”
Corban found energy in the third set. The Warriors took an early lead and led late in the match, 17-10.
This time, Morehead didn’t call a timeout and made the Mountaineers play through the adversity.
EOU would mount a comeback and tie the game at 19 a piece. The Mountaineers then pushed through and won the set and match with a kill from Rebecca Haight, 25-21.
Claire Bailey led Corban’s offense with nine kills. Chandra Teague and Kendra Staymates had 8 and 6 kills respectively. Katherine Salness guided the Warriors with 26 assists and 14 digs on the night.
