Mounties put trio on all-Cascade squad
In one of the closest votes in recent times, The College of Idaho’s Torrey Hulsey was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Year by a vote of the conference coaches.
The 6-foot-1 senior middle blocker from Sutter, Calif., ranked third in the CCC in hitting percentage at .292 and 10th in total kills per set with 2.76. Hulsey recorded double-digit kills in 14 of the 25 matches the Yotes have played this season and has tallied at least one block in 24 of those 25.
In her 12th season at the helm of the College of Idaho volleyball program, Liz Mendiola narrowly edged out EOU’s Kaki Morehead for CCC Coach of the Year honors. Mendiola guided the Coyotes to their seventh-straight CCC title and another 20-win season and another trip to the NAIA national championships. This will be the fifth-consecutive year and sixth of the last seven for the Yotes in the NAIA tournament.
Morehead won her 100th career victory this year and guided the Mountaineers to their first appearance in the Cascade Conference championship game.
Northwest Christian’s Tami Brown picked up the CCC’s Newcomer of the Year award. Brown, a 6-foot-2 senior middle blocker from Eugene, finished the season second in the conference with a 3.46 kills per game. Brown spent a season at The Master’s College (Calif.) and two seasons with Oregon State University before returning home to finish her collegiate career with the hometown Beacons.
Concordia’s Kelsey Kai (5-5, DS, Troutdale) picked up this year’s Defensive Specialist/Libero of the Year award. The Cavalier junior led all DS’s with 5.98 digs per set and was seventh in the CCC in service aces per set at 0.36.
Kaitlyn Duncan, a senior from Prineville, made the all-conference team for the Mountaineers as a Libero.
Two EOU underclassmen also made the conference honor squad. Middle hitter Casey Loper of Powell Butte joined fellow sophomore Stefani Sorensen (Camas, Wash.), an outside hitter for the Mounties, on the tournament honors list.
