PENDLETON — Size does make a difference.

Heppner started three post players during a 42-35 win against Enterprise in the opening round of the Blue Mountain Conference tournament Friday.

That size translated into rebounds and second-chance points.

The No. 2 seeded Mustangs out rebounded Enterprise 40-20 — with 19 coming on the offensive end.

“Their size obviously played a big role in the game,” Outlaws head coach Mike Crawford said. “Our girls fought hard under the hoop, but a few inches all the way around is a difficult thing to make up.”

It would have helped to have a full, make that a healthy squad.

Enterprise post Tricia O'Leary struggled up the NBA length court.

O'Leary was one of several players struggling with an illness.

“Not having our team at full strength hurt,” Crawford said. “It affected us as the game went along. But we can’t blame the loss on that. We just came up short.”

The obstacles mounted for the Outlaws.

Theresa Stangel went to the bench early with foul trouble.

That left Sara Butterfield and a host of guards to slow down the trio of 5-foot-11 inch Heppner posts.

Both teams fell short in the first half at the free-throw line.

Enterprise shot 3-of-10 in the opening two quarters, while Heppner shot 4-of-9.

However, the Mustangs reloaded at the half.

“I would bet anything on these girls making their free throws at the end of the game,” Mustangs head coach Mark Dowdy said. “We work on it all the time.”

Leading 26-24 after three quarters, Heppner connected on 10 free throws in the final right minutes.

Heppner’s Katie Kilkenny led the way, tallying 18 points grabbed 12 rebounds.

The senior post hit four free-throws in a row to give the Mustangs a 34-26 lead — the largest lead in the game.

Tonya Neil and Kayann Layton each hit 3-point field goals late in the fourth quarter, but Heppner made the crucial free throws to ice the game.

Layton led Enterprise with 11 points.

The Outlaws will play Pilot Rock at 1 p.m. today.

Elgin’s season ended with a 50-41 loss to Pilot Rock Friday.

Samantha Perez and Alyssa Plummer left everything on the court — and they won’t be back.

Perez paced the Huskies with 15 points, and Plummer finished with nine points.

“Our seniors knew it could be their last game,” Elgin head coach Darci Miller said. “They played great, and shouldn’t hang their heads.”

In the end, a loss of a sophomore made the difference.

Tara Ludwig fouled out with 1:50 left in the game.

The Rockets took off after the 6-foot post left the floor.

Ludwig tallied 16 rebounds in the game, but Pilot Rock controlled the glass in the closing minutes without her in the paint.

Brittany Doherty finished with a game-high 21 points for the Rockets.

Jess McClune, Tara Witherspoon and Ali Neitch also wore purple for the final time for their team.
