Spurred by doubles and errors, Legacy Ford defeated visiting Baker, 17-8, Wednesday at Optimist Field in a nine-inning, wooden bat contest.

Travis Ludwig, Nick Thompson, Josh Yundt, Kole Stein and Jacob Johnston each whacked doubles — proving they can inflict damage without aluminum bats.

“Most of our team, top to bottom, hit the ball really well,” Mustangs coach Eric Yundt said. “I was really pleased with the way we stroked it.”

Especially Ludwig.

His leadoff double in the  opening inning one-hopped off the centerfield fence, beginning a four-run outburst.  What if that shot was struck with an aluminum bat?

“I said, ‘If that was an aluminum bat, that was to the top of the flag pole,’” Eric Yundt said.  “He hit monsters out there.”

Meanwhile, Johnston earned the win on the mound, giving up just three runs across six innings.  And he left the contest after pitching four scoreless innings.

“He was a little rough the first couple innings, and then he settled down,” Eric Yundt said.

“I thought he did really well.”

As did those Mustangs bats.

They put the ball in play. Ran bases aggressively. And forced Baker into seven errors, leading to a dominating victory.

The 17 runs scored with wooden bats is a good sign for this Legacy Ford team, which will compete in the Hermiston Summer Wood Bat Tournament this weekend. Eleven teams compose two pools, and Legacy Ford will open Friday at noon versus Yakima in Pool B.

Legacy Ford will also face Treasure Valley Saturday, followed by Vancouver on Sunday, with both games starting at noon. Depending upon how they fare, Legacy Ford may play in the tournament finals Sunday evening.
