NEBEKER'S LATE GOAL KEEPS LA GRANDE IN 1ST
ONTARIO Aaron Nebeker's penalty kick in the final minute of regulation sealed La Grande's District 7 soccer game against Ontario Tuesday, keeping La Grande alive for a league title.
La Grande defeated No. 6-ranked Ontario 2-1.
La Grande's Trae Perry had a "bicycle kick" goal about the 50th minute.
La Grande coach Jessy Watson said Perry kicked the ball over his head with his back to the goal. He said that type of goal is not scored too often.
Ontario tied the game with a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.
With about 50 seconds to a minute left, Nebeker had the penalty kick.
Watson said La Grande goalie Josef Mielke had four exceptional saves.
La Grande started slowly offensively but came on in the second half, the coach said.
La Grande is in first place with a 7-1 (21 points) District 7 record. Next up for La Grande is an important Oct. 21 road game against McLoughlin, which is also gunning for first place.
