JOSEPH — A big, enthusiastic rodeo crowd was on hand Friday as cowboys from Golden Valley, Nev., and Red Bluff, Calif., bested Growney Brothers bulls in high-handed fashion.

Ryan Howard of Golden Valley, fifth rider out of the chute in the second section of the bull riding, scored an 84 to take the lead in the event.

Monty Schaack, the next cowboy to go, tried his best to top that, and only narrowly failed. The Red Bluff competitor scored an 81 to move into a second place tie with Bert Crump. Crump made his ride Thursday.

The third best score in Friday's bull riding belonged to Ryan Hochstrat, who put up a 79 in first-section action.

In other bucking events Friday, bareback rider Sean Culver scored a 76 to tie for the lead with Paul Jones. Lee Lantz finished a 68-point score.

In saddle bronc action, Ira Slasowski of Plain City, Utah, grabbed the lead with a freewheeling, 80-point ride. Slasowski handily unseated Max Filipini from the lead. Filipini scored a 75 on Thursday.

Most of Friday's team ropers had a hard time, racking up penalties or taking no-times in the event. A fine, 4.6-second effort by Pat Boyle and Dennis Watkins went for naught as they were assessed a penalty and ended with a 10.6.

Jared Cox and Trevor McCoin scored a 6.1 Thursday and still hold the lead in the event.

Jeff Coehlo of Long Creek was Friday's top calf roper, with an 11.9 time. Jake Echevarria came up with a 12.6 in Friday action.

Bulldogger K.C. Jones gave the Friday crowd a thrill with a strong, 4.6-second performance.

Sam McArtor had scored a 6.1 in Thursday's go. McArtor tried again on Friday, notching a disappointing, penalty-added 15.4 time.

In ladies' barrel racing, Brittany Pozzi seized the lead with a 17.06 effort. That effort topped Thursday's best performance, a 17.36 put up by Jessica McMahon.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned rodeo continues tonight at 7. It concludes with a show at 2 p.m. Sunday.
