Jake Stockhoff will remember Saturdays East-West Shrine Football Game as only one other person before him can.

As a Shriner.

The Union High School graduate joined the Shriners last week, becoming just the second player in the history of the game to be a Shriner and play in the game.

The first? Former Union teammate Odin Miller, who played in last years game and convinced Stockhoff to join.

Odin was telling me about it; he was saying it would be fun to join, Stockhoff said this week after taking a break from practice for the game.

The annual game, one of the largest fund-raisers for Shriners Hospital, starts with pregame festivities at 6 p.m. Saturday at Baker Bulldog Stadium in Baker City. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Stockhoff has something on Miller when it comes to joining, even though Miller was first. Stockhoff joined last week with his father, Hank Stockhoff.

Both asked to join Grande Ronde Valley Lodge No. 56 A.F. & A.M., Jake after prodding from Miller and Hank after some friends talked to him about it.

Playing in the Shrine game fulfills a long-time goal for Stockhoff, who will play offensive guard and defensive linebacker Saturday. He has wanted to play in it since he started playing football in the fifth grade.

I was pretty excited, when he was chosen, he said. It was hard to believe at first. Its a pretty big honor to be in it.

Saturdays game wont be Stockhoffs last, however, as it will be for many of the players. He will attend Carroll College in Montana this fall and play on the football team there.

Stockhoff is one of five players and a coach from Union and Wallowa county schools who will play Saturday. Kiel Gekeler of Cove, Eli Bingham of Powder Valley, Clint Steen of Joseph, Brad Sweet of La Grande and coach Dan Willitts of Powder Valley are participating.

John Mathis of Mazama High School will coach the East team and George Crace of Wilsonville is the West coach.

Saturdays festivities include a parade through downtown Baker City at 10:30 a.m.
