NO. 1-RANKED BURNS BASKETBALL GIRLS COMING TO LA GRANDE
The No. 1 ranked Burns basketball girls will be in La Grande Saturday to take on a Tigers team that has started off 2-0 in Greater Oregon League play.
Burns is 14-1 overall and gained the No. 1 ranking in the Jan. 13 coaches' poll.
The Tigers are off to an undefeated start in league. The girls last week shocked then-top 10 ranked Baker last week, giving up just 25 points to the Bulldogs. Burns is expected to be an even bigger test for the Tigers.
The Tiger boys, also off to a 2-0 start in the GOL, play Burns as well Saturday. The boys' game begins at 6 p.m., with the girls' following at 7:30 p.m.
Also on Saturday is an Old Oregon League battle for first place between the No. 1-ranked Powder Valley girls and an extremely good team from Crane. Powder Valley beat Crane 31-30 in Crane earlier this season. That game should begin at about 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Crane boys take on the Powder Valley boys, fighting for a playoff spot in the OOL after being shut out last year, afterward.
The surprising Wallowa boys host Jordan Valley Saturday. Wallowa didn't get a lot of attention heading into this season after the Cougars lost their leading scorer, Randy Spaur, but Wallowa is tied with the Mustangs and Cove for first place, and received some votes in the latest top 10 poll (Cove is ranked No. 6).
Wallowa stung Cove at home last week and the Cougars nearly beat Jordan Valley on the road, losing that game in overtime.
The Wallowa and Jordan Valley girls will play at about 4 p.m., with the boys game following.
The La Grande wrestling team also hosts its first GOL meet Friday night. The Tigers host league rivals Ontario and Riverside beginning at 5 p.m.
