NO. 2-RANKED BURNS RUNS AWAY FROM LA GRANDE GIRLS IN FOURTH QUARTER

By Raenelle Kwock

Observer Staff Writer

The Burns girls are alone in first place in the Greater Oregon League after defeating La Grande 41-25 in a make-up basketball game Tuesday.

The Tigers and Hilanders came into the game tied with 3-0 league records.

The Hilanders, ranked No. 2 in the Jan. 20 coaches' poll, dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers 20-3.

Dusti Travis drained two 3-pointers in a 10-0 Hilander run in the fourth quarter. The Hilanders led 32-22 and stayed in control the rest of the way.

"It is great for Burns," La Grande coach Isaac Williams said. "(The Hilanders) did everything they needed to do to win."

Williams said the Tigers played "good enough on defense.

"We didn't do enough things offensively to win," he said.

The Tigers outscored the Hilanders 11-6 in the third quarter. They took a 22-21 lead into the fourth quarter.

Travis sparked the Hilanders with her first 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter. Then, Jessica Clemens converted a three-point play to put Burns ahead 27-22 with 6:23 remaining.

Travis hit her second 3-pointer to open up an eight-point cushion for the Hilanders.

Several close range shots did not fall for the Tigers after that point.

Maria Clemens scored to put the Hilanders ahead 32-22.

A timeout was called with 2:49 remaining. Rasmussen found Crouch inside for a bucket to stop the Hilander run. It would be the Tigers' final basket.

The Hilanders were 9-for-10 from the free-throw line to close out the game.

The Tigers (7-7 overall, 3-1 in GOL) travel to Vale Friday. They host Ontario Saturday.

Rasmussen scored nine points for the Tigers.

Jessica Clemens paced the Hilanders with 11 points.
