UNION Little things added up en masse against Unions baseball team Tuesday.

The Bobcats dropped an 11-1 Wapiti League makeup contest to visiting Nyssa in five innings.

The score was deceiving, though, as Union (2-5 overall, 0-2 league) gave up eight unearned runs off 10 errors.

I think were struggling to find our place. But were improving, just not at the rate wed like to improve, Union coach Greg Poor said.

Nyssa (5-2, 2-0) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning that put the Bulldogs in control.

In the bottom of the frame, Union had its chance to cut into the deficit. Lucas Maples led off with a single, then stole second base. Shae Prince, batting third, hit a single and got to second on a steal, giving the Bobcats men at second and third.

The rally was cut short when Unions next two batters failed to get on base.

For the next two innings, neither team threatened to cross the plate. Nyssa exploded in the fourth inning for eight runs, including a three-run home run, to put the game out of reach.

Shae (Prince) did a good job on the mound, but weve just got to keep working on our defense, Poor said.

The Bobcats are loaded with underclassmen. The team has only two seniors starting with one sophomore and two freshmen starting in the field.

Were showing our youth right now, Poor said.

Offensively, Union struggled at the plate. Maples went 2-for-3 and Kodi Buchanan was 2-for-2.

Union is at Elgin for a Wapiti League doubleheader Saturday.

Joseph handed 1st loss

JOSEPH What happens when you lose your first baseball game of the season? You beat the tar out that team in the second game.

Joseph did just that Tuesday when it fell 5-3 to visiting Stanfield in the first half of a non-league doubleheader. The Eagles rallied by clobbering Stanfield 17-6 in six innings in the second game.

The loss was Josephs first of the season as it improved to 7-1 after winning the second game.

Stanfield broke a 3-3 tie by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

(Stanfield) played better baseball than us in that first game, and we made too many errors, Joseph coach Dave Schmidt said.

The Eagles tallied only three runs, but still outhit Stanfield 8-7 behind Ryan Barstads 3-for-4 performance. Chris Garrett went 2-for-4 with two doubles.

The second game was a Joseph slugfest. The Eagles had 19 hits with Gibbs, Dollen Stroup and Rohs Kuppinger going 3-for-3 each. Barstad went 3-for-4, Matt Wagner was 2-for-3 and Jimmie Baynes was 2-for-4.

We started swinging the bat really well in the second game, Schmidt said. Weve got to do a better job of coming out and playing hard right off the bat; at home especially.

Joseph travels to Halfway where it plays Pine-Eagle in a Wapiti League doubleheader.
