Outlaws' Baird beats field and wind

MILTON-FREEWATER —  Wind made The Carnival of Speed at little slower Friday.

The invitational hosted by Mac-Hi featured consistent 20 mph winds.

“It made for a tough day,” Elgin head coach Chad Peck said. “At least we got to get out and compete. We haven’t been able to work outside too much, so it was good for the kids to get out of the gym and onto the track.”

Megan Jarrell tossed a personal best 38 feet, 2 1/2 inches to take first place in the shot put.

Jess McClune claimed the other first-place finish for the Huskies, winning the long jump with a 16 feet, 5 1/4 inch mark.

Candra Clark grabbed the lone medal for Powder Valley.

The senior placed seventh in the javelin with a throw of 94 feet, 9 inches.

Tricia O’Leary took second in the triple jump for Enterprise with a jump of 33 feet, 4 1/4 inches.

La Grande’s Nur Sofe continued his hurdle dominance. The sophomore won the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.17. Sofe placed third in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Jacob Johnson (6-0 mark) and Brandon Powell (5-10 mark) finished second and third, respectively, in the high jump.

Enterprise’s Patrick Baird took home the only other area first-place medal, winning the 800-meter run.
