BOARDMAN — The Outlaws rode into Boardman and walked out with a district title. Enterprise beat out Stanfield for the Class 1A District 4 Track and Field Championship Friday. While there weren’t a lot of first-place finishes, the Outlaws secured a number of high finishes. Dusty McAuliffe won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.86. Freshman Matt Perren grabbed two second place medals He finished second on the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, 6 inches. Perren’s leap of 5 feet, 8 inches in the high jump was four inches behind David Thurmond of Pilot Rock. Kayla Foster and Trica O’Leary brought home a first and second-place medal apiece. Foster won the 400-meter run (1:04.02), and took second in the 200-meter dash (28.37). O’Leary won the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 11 inches. Her mark 32 feet, 5 inches in the triple jump was two inches behind the winner. The Class 2A State Meet will be held at Western Oregon University in Monmouth Friday.
Huskies finish secondBOARDMAN — In an odd turn of events one of the states’ best long jumpers won’t be competing at the state meet. Jess McClune failed to record a mark in three attempts. “I know it was frustrating,” Elgin head coach Chad Peck said. “We’re still trying to figure it out. She bounced back really well though.” McClune will still be competing in three events — 100- and 300-meter hurdles and the 100-meter dash. Megan Jarrell successfully defended her shot put title with a mark of 31 feet, 10.75 inches. Now the quest will be to defend her state crown. Jarrell will also compete in the discus after a second-place finish. The Huskies will send one boy to the state meet, Wyatt Lewis. He won the pole vault by clearing the nine foot mark. “It was a surprise,” Peck said. “We haven’t been able to work on field events much this spring due to the weather.”
Union goes the distanceBOARDMAN — The Bobcats were built to run. Union will send five distance runners to the state meet. Michael Cox (1,500-meter run) and Tom Sheehy (3,000-meter run) will represent the boys team after taking first place medals from the district meet. Freshman Kate Stewart will represent Union in the 1,500-meter run. Shoshoni Walker and Ariel O’Reilly will compete in the 3,000-meter run. “Our kids had a great day,” Bobcats head coach Brad Dunten said. “They know how to run those distance races. We’ll just see what happens at state.” Alex Palmer will move on after a pair of second place finishes. Palmer finished the 200-meter dash in 24.48, and clocked a 2:09.21 time in the 800-meter run.
