Outlaws close in on 10th straight title
|
PENDLETON — Eighteen holes down, Eighteen more to go. The drive for 10-straight district titles began Monday for the Enterprise boys golf team at the Wildhorse golf course. After three rounds in the 70s — Cole Sajonia (74), Dakota Hull (76), Marcus Anderson (77) — the Outlaws will carry a cushion in to the final round. “We’re playing really well right now,” Enterprise head coach Mike Crawford said. “The boys are pushing each other, and I don't think we’ve peaked yet.” The Outlaws finished with a team score of 310. Nyssa sits 19 shots back after a 329. Sajonia, a freshman, is in search of his first district title. He leads the field by one stroke. Nyssa’s J.J. Eldred is one shot back, while Hull is two shots off the lead. “It’s going to be an interesting day,” Crawford said. “We’ll see who can handle the pressure.” As for Sajonia, his coach has no worries. “He’s played in more big tournaments than most of the boys out here,” Crawford said. “(Cole) and (Dakota) will be right in the thick of who wins the title.” Wallowa’s Tyler Harshfield is fighting for a spot at the state tournament. The top three scores from individuals not on the top two teams qualify for state. With a round of 86, Harshfield has a one shot lead over Harold Kneirman III of Burns for the third spot. Play resumed at 9 a.m. today. 3A/2A/1A District 5Team scores Enterprise 310; Nyssa 329; Burns 343; Wallowa 379; Vale 384; Union 418; Imbler 425 Top-five Cole Sajonia, Ent, 74; J.J. Tigers streak nearing an endPENDLETON — The streak may be over, but La Grande is building toward starting another run. The Tigers owned the Greater Oregon League on the links for seven years. After an opening round score of 393, that streak will come to an end at the district tournament this year. Baker and Ontario finished in a tie for first with scores of 351. Mac-Hi is two shots back after a 353. “We had a goal to break 400,” La Grande head coach Ron Evans said. “There were a few boys who could have played better. But there’s a difference between playing here during the regular season and the district tournament.” While a full team of Tigers will not be headed to state, Mitchell Henry and James Mathson will fight for an at-large berth. Henry carded a 93, and Mathson finished with a 95. “It’s going to be a wild day,” Evans said. “There are too many different scenarios with those three teams so close.” 4A-7 Greater Oregon LeagueTeams scores Baker 351, Ontario 351; Mac-Hi 353, La Grande 393 Top-five Dru Simonski-Davis, Baker, 81; Ethan Delong, Baker, 85; Johnathon Stone, Mac-Hi, 85; Brad McGowan, Ontario, 85; Dallas Brockett, Ontario, 85 Area results Mitchell Henry, LG, 93; James Mathson, 95; Tanner Orton, LG, 101; James Gianandrea, LG, 105; Taylor Mutch, LG, 110
Ladendorf leads TigersPENDLETON — An attitude change left a La Grande sophomore one stroke short of her goal — to break 100. Darcy Ladendorf may have missed her goal, but her round left her three shots off the lead at the 4A/3A/2A/1A District 7 golf tournament. “She stopped being so hard on herself,” Tigers coach Kelli Miller said. “(Darcy) is so positive with every one in her group, but she’s too critical of herself sometimes. A few good holes built up her confidence, and that made a great round for her.” La Grande’s team score of 415 leads the tournament by a stroke. Heppner sits one shot back with a 416. Keri Urbanski and Nicole Webster finished with rounds of 103. “All the girls can play a little better tomorrow,” Miller said. “We want that title really bad.” Girls District 7Team scores La Grande 415; Heppner 416 Top-five Maggie Armato, Heppner, 97; Darcy Ladendorf, LG, 100; Ballie Keithley, Heppner, 102; Keri Urbanski, LG, 103; Nicole Webster, LG 103 Area scores Darcy Ladendorf, LG, 100; Keri Urbanski, LG, 103; Nicole Webster, LG, 103; Tessa Tsiatsos, LG, 109; Brenna Christison, LG, 117
Bruce eyeing another titlePENDLETON — Heather Bruce can see the finish line. The Enterprise junior is 18 holes from winning back-to-back district titles. She now sits in the opposite seat from a season ago. As a sophomore, she erased Jennifer Jaramillo’s eight-stroke lead on Day 2. Bruce holds a six-shot lead over Scottie Jo Hemlick of Ontario after opening with an 83. “That would be awesome for her to win consecutive titles,” Enterprise head coach Mike Crawford said. “She gave away a few shots on the greens today. It’s a tough adjustment going from the ‘postage stamp’ greens in Enterprise to the spacious greens at Wildhorse.” Teammate Miranda McCarthy is inside the cutline after shooting a 108. She currently holds the second at-large spot. That leaves Kayann Layton, of Enterprise, and Anna Michrina, of Union, to battle for the final spot. Layton carded a 117, and leads Michrina by three strokes.
