Outlaws ride away with district titles

PENDLETON — A soft spoken Dakota Hull had no problem sharing the spotlight for a day. In the end, the Outlaw junior rode in a grabbed his second consecutive 3A/2A/1A District 4 golf title. Trailing teammate Cole Sajonia at the start of the day, Hull shot an even par 36 on the front nine. “(Cole) has been chasing me down these last couple of weeks,” Hull said. “It was time for me to take control of things.” He set down his bag softly at the turn and handed over his card. Two groups behind him, Sajonia and J.J. Aldred stumbled. The Enterprise freshman learned a lesson on the course. Sajonia mistakenly hit the wrong ball — a two-stroke penalty. “It really stuck with him,” Enterprise head coach Mike Crawford said. “But it’s something that he’ll learn from. The best part was, he didn’t blame anyone.” Sajonia didn’t. But he never let it go. Like a bad cloud, the mistake followed him around the course. But talent paved the way to a good round — by most people’s standards. “I know he didn’t like his score,” Crawford said. “But an 83 is a pretty good number.” Wayward drives sent Aldred out with an 82. Hull navigated the final four holes 2-over par, taking a double bogey on No. 16 — a par-3. Teammate Marcus Anderson did the same. He quietly turned in the second-best score of the day a 77. Anderson leapt past Sajonia and Aldred to finish second. “(Marcus) is a solid player,” Crawford said. “He’s been in the 70s in the last five events. The key is to peak at the right time. We’re close to doing that.” Golfing in the fourth spot, Nick Januzzi crawled into the 70s. He finished with a 79 — the fourth best round of the day. Januzzi finished in sixth place. A two-day total of 624 gave Enterprise a 50-shot margin of victory. Now the Outlaws have won 10 straight district titles. “It’s a pretty amazing feat,” Crawford said. “It takes some luck, and great golfers. I’ve been blessed to have both for a while now.” The Outlaws will have a familiar face following them to the state tournament. Wallowa’s Tyler Harshfield will make the trip to the Emerald Valley Golf Club. Harshfield finished in seventh-place with a two-day total of 167. The state tournament begins Monday.

Bruce blows away district fieldPENDLETON — A junior in high school shouldn’t have to worry about gray hairs — should she? After a tension-filled district tournament last season, Enterprise’s Heather Bruce eased in to her second title. “It was a little easier going in with a lead,” Bruce said, having to come back from eight strokes down last season. “Being able to relax and play golf really helped.” After holding a five-stroke lead heading in to Day 2, Bruce dashed the hopes of the girls’ field by carding an 80 — for a two-day total of 163. Scotti Jo Hemlick finished 18 shots off the pace with a 181. The lead would’ve been larger without a hiccup on the par-5 No. 5. Stuck in a sand trap, Bruce took a quadruple-bogey. She played the other eight holes coming in 1-over par. “It was a good day, other than that,” Bruce said. “I cut a few strokes from yesterday with my putter. The greens were pretty fast. But if you got it on-line with the right speed it went in.” Teammate Miranda McCarthy will join Bruce at the state tournament. McCarthy secured a spot with 228. Union’s Anna Michrina missed a trip to state by one stroke. She finished with a two-day total of 229. Enterprise head coach Mike Crawford said it was exciting to witness back-to-back championships. “It’s pretty rare,” Crawford said. “One other time we won back-to-back district titles, but it wasn’t the same athlete. Having (Heather) and (Dakota) Hull do it in the same year is pretty amazing.” Team scoresBaker 792; Ontario 817; Enterprise 922; Burns 974 Top-10 1. Heather Bruce, Ent, 163; 2.
