Outlaws shoot down Rockets

PENDLETON — Not all wins come with a pretty bow on top — and Enterprise beat an off game, a feisty Rockets team and a little added pressure Saturday. In the end it added up to a 39-36 win for the Outlaws. One Rockets player voiced the overwhelming factor the shadowed this game — the loser travels to No. 1, and defending state champion, Portland Christian. “Why do we have to go,” she said. “We’re just going to lose.” With that fact stuck in the back of players’ minds, the play on the court resembled an awful football game. Passes went sailing all over the court with no receiver in sight. The teams combined to committ 72 turnovers. With the added fact that Enterprise shot 21 percent from the field in the game, head coach Mike Crawford was happy to walk out of the Pendleton Convention Center with a win. “That’s what you would expect with two inexperienced teams putting everything on the line,” Crawford said. “It wasn’t pretty, but we made it work. It was a total team effort. That’s what these girls are about.” Outlaws captain Theresa Stangel sat on the bench most of the game. She logged 11 minutes in the game and scored five points. “She was in foul trouble early,” Crawford said. “I decided to gamble. (Theresa) was going to play until she fouled out and we’d take what we got off the bench after that.” It’s a good thing Enterprise had a couple aces up its sleeve. Jocelyn Stangel hit a crucial 3-pointer during a 9-2 run late in the fourth quarter. An ill but recovering Kayla Foster contributed four points during the game deciding run. “I wasn’t going to sit out,” Foster said. “Our team captains did a great job of keeping our bench in the game. It’s great to see those younger players coming through when we needed them.” When asked about the possible Portland Christian game, Foster said that added a little motivation. “No one wants to open the state tournament against them,” Foster said. “We talked about it before the game, but I don’t think it affected how we played.”

Union left feeling a little deja vuPENDLETON — It was a game a year in the making. Flash back to last year. Heppner entered the Blue Mountain Conference championship game as the No. 1 seed, with Union trying to earn an upset in the final game, but fell short. This season the roles were reversed. But unlike last year the No. 1 seed fell, as the Bobcats lost to Heppner 48-44. Sophomore Jessy Reynolds said the loss was a little disheartening. “We’ve been waiting for this game all year,” Reynolds said. “Having an eight-day layoff in between games hurt us. I wish we could have been able to get on the floor and play.” Heppner had no trouble getting started. Megan Orr opened the game with consecutive 3-point shots to open the game. Union struggled to rally back. The Mustangs keyed on Reynolds in the paint. Often with two players draped over her, the 5-foot-10-inch post still scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. “We knew she was the key,” Heppner head coach Mark Dowdy said. “Our posts had great help-side defense. We feel like our strength is matching up against people in the post.” Heppner used a 10-2 run to open the fourth quarter to pull away for good. Senior Shoshoni Walker finished with 10 points. Union will host Kennedy Friday. The time is still to be determined.

Hot half by Heppner sinks BobcatsPENDLETON — In crunch time the Bobcats’ shooting went cold Saturday. Vying for the final spot into the Class 2A state tournament the Union boys basketball team fell short against Heppner 46-41. “I’m not sure what happened,” Union head coach Brett Dunten said. “It’s a frustrating way for the season to end. We had the game, but couldn’t make anything in the fourth quarter.” The Bobcats shot 27 percent in the final half, and Heppner used a 19 point fourth quarter to escape with a win. Union carried a 31-27 lead into the final eight minutes of play. Heppner put on a juggling act in the first half with a trio of posts in foul trouble. The Mustangs received balanced scoring in the second half with its paint presence back intact. In the end the posts made the difference. The Mustangs out-rebounded Union 41-33. Six-foot-four-inch Nacho Elguezabal paced Heppner with 10 points, while 6-foot-4 Andre Rauch finished with nine points. Brian Savely led the Bobcats with 14 points.
