BAKER CITY Mitchells bane was Joelle Bain.

The Powder Valley senior ruled the first half and led the Badgers to a 71-22 girls basketball victory Thursday over the Loggers at the District 4-1A Basketball Tournament.

Bain had 21 of her 25 points in the first half, missing just one shot all game.

She also had 10 rebounds, including six offensive boards that she put back for scores.

She has a great knack for being where rebounds come off, Powder Valley coach Allen Bingham said. I dont know if any of (her 25 points) came off regular shots.

Tonight, Powder Valley plays the Old Oregon Leagues third-place team, Crane, which beat Dayville-Monument 55-39 Thursday afternoon. The winner of tonights game goes to state.

Mitchell was hardly the team to challenge the Old Oregon League champions, who won all 10 of their league games and have won 11 in a row. But the third-ranked Badgers didnt take the Trico Leagues fourth-place team lightly.

It was awesome that we could step it up and play good in the first half, Bain said. We didnt really know exactly what to expect.

Its a real tribute to a team when they get into a game like that and still keep up their intensity, Bingham said.

Powder Valley (18-3) applied its backcourt press at the start of the game, and that contributed to a 12-1 lead three minutes into the game.

Mitchell scored just one basket in the second quarter, and behind Bain and Amanda Bingham, who had 11 points in the first half, Powder Valley scored 27 in the period.

Bingham finished with 16 points. Bain had eight of Powder Valleys 28 steals, which accounted for most of Mitchells 39 turnovers.

Off the bench, Amber Harrison scored 10 for Powder Valley, with Amie Russell getting eight rebounds.

It was important tonight to get these bench players on the floor, because were going to need them, coach Bingham said.

In boys games at the tournament Thursday, Prairie City beat Spray 59-49 and Jordan Valley beat Burnt River 73-44.

In consolation, the Adrian girls beat Burnt River 40-38 and the Mitchell boys topped Dayville-Monument 69-47.
