PLENTY STILL ON TAP FOR YOUTH THIS SUMMER

SUMMER RECREATION PROGRAM

Rock Climbing Camp

Who: Ages 6-15. Limited to 15 students per session.

What: Designed to provide an introduction to rock climbing. Students will learn basic skills of rope management, knot tying and belaying. Equipment provided.

Session II: July 9-12, 1-3 p.m.

Session III: July 23-26, 1-3 p.m.

Session IV: Aug. 13-16, 1-3 p.m.

Session V: Aug. 27-30, 1-3 p.m.

Where: Indoor climbing wall, Quinn Coliseum at Eastern Oregon University.

Cost: $32.50.

THINK LINK CLASSES

Preschool Prime Time

Who: Preschoolers and their parents.

What: Simple crafts offered as well as playtime.

When: Thursdays through July, 10-11:30 a.m.

Where: Think Link Discovery Center, 906 Washington Ave.

Cost: $2 each day for parent and child together.

Origami

What: Make a pinwheel and candy dish from origami paper. Taught by Barb and Kathryn Ely.

Beginning Mountain Biking

What: An introduction to mountain biking, including skills and safety. Students must bring mountain bike, gloves, helmet, lunch and rain gear if necessary. Taught by James Hasse.

Old Time Dancing

Who: Students and an adult dance partner.

What: Learn old-time community dancing skills brought to the U.S. by Irish, Scottish and English immigrants. Taught by Carla Arnold.

Travel on the Magic School Bus

Who: Recommended for grades K-2.

What: Travel from outer space to deep inside the earth. Taught by Pat VanNice, Susan Koehn and Linda Meyers.

Who: Children.

Veterans Memorial Pool Swim Lessons

Who: All children.

What: American Red Cross lessons, levels 1-5, are taught, emphasizing repetition of skills. Classes are half hour each weekday, 9-11 a.m. Registration cant be done over the phone.

Session III: July 9-20; register by July 3.

Session IV: July 23-Aug. 3; register by July 18.

Session V: Aug. 6-17; register by Aug. 1.

Where: Veterans Memorial Pool.

Cost: $27.50 for first child, $25 for additional child. Discount of 25 percent for holders of 3-month or annual pool pass.

Have-A-Ball

Who: Grades 1-12.

What: Bowling teams for youth.

When: Ongoing

Tuesdays & Thursdays: Grades 1-6, 9:30 a.m.; grades 7-12, 1:30 p.m.

Wednesdays: Grades 7-12, 9:30 a.m.; grades 1-6, 1:30 p.m.

Where: The Rock Bowling and Fun Center.

Cost: $8 per week.

Water Babies Class

Who: Parents and babies 6 months to 3 years.

What: Skills introduced include blowing bubbles, kicking, entering and exiting pool, jumping, submersion, arm movement, back float and bobbing.

Session II: July 9-20; register June 29, 4-7 p.m.

Session III: Aug. 6-17; register July 27, 4-7 p.m.

Where: Veterans Memorial Pool.

Cost: $27.50 for one adult and child.

USA Tennis 1-2-3 Camp

Who: Ages 8-15. Limited to 16 students per session.

What: Provides an introduction to basic skills, including forehand, backhand, how to volley and other ball control skills. Equipment, balls, rule book and T-shirt provided.

When: July 9-12, 9-11 a.m.; July 30-Aug. 2, 9-11 a.m.

Where: La Grande High School tennis courts.

Cost: $32.50.

Start Smart

Who: Ages 3-5. Limited to 20 students per session.

What: Parents work together with their children to learn basic skills like throwing, catching, kicking and batting. Program prepares children for organized sports without threat of competition or fear of getting hurt. Equipment provided.

Session I: July 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, 6-7 p.m.

Session II: Aug. 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 6-7 p.m.

Cost: $22.50.

Track and Field Camp

Who: Ages 7-15.

What: Provides an introduction to the sport. Students learn basics of sprinting, running, jumping and throwing. Equipment provided. Final day is a track meet.

Where: Eastern Oregon University track and field complex.

Cost: $30.

Archery Camp

Who: Ages 10-16. Limited to 10 students per session.

What: Students will learn basic skills such as equipment handling, safety, shooting and target practice. Equipment provided.

Session II: July 16-19, 1-3 p.m.

Session III: July 30-Aug. 3, 1-3 p.m.

Session IV: Aug. 20-23, 1-3 p.m.

Where: Enrollees will get schedule.

Cost: $32.50

OTHER CAMPS

Chief Joseph Summer Camp

Who: Kids entering grades 3-6.

What: Annual week-long day camp at the Buhler Ranch near Joseph, with transportation available from Wallowa, Lostine, Enterprise and Joseph. Volunteers are needed to staff workshops and help with child care. Raffle tickets are available to support camp. Prizes include overnight boat tour and guided fishing trip. Raffle tickets are available at 426-3103.

When: July 23-27, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: $45 before July 2, $55 between July 2-22.
