POLE VAULT HURTS EO DECATHLETE

KLAMATH FALLS — After leading Monday, Eastern Oregon's Matt Young ended up second Tuesday at the Cascade Conference decathlon championships.

Young had four first-place finishes, but he could not clear higher than 8 feet, 1 inches in the pole vault.

Heading into the pole vault, Young was leading by 363 points, but eventual champion Brian Quinn of Oregon Tech topped 14-4 for 722 points. Young had just 235 points in the pole vault. Quinn is an NAIA All-American in the event.

Young had the javelin and 1,500 to make up the 124 points he was down. He won the javelin with a toss of 151-11 for 534 points, but Quinn tossed 145-2 for 504 points, leaving Young 94 points out of first.

In the 1,500, Young needed to finish 18 seconds ahead of Quinn to win the decathlon. But Quinn stayed close to Young the entire race and finished within nine seconds of him for the final margin of victory of 39 points.

Eastern's Brian Hartley, who was third after the first day, fell behind in points after the 110 high hurdles and ended up in sixth place with 5,145 points. Eastern's Paul Lapke finished seventh with 4,117 points.
