POWDER PREPS FOR CONDON REMATCH

By Pat Perkins

Observer Staff Writer

The Powder Valley Badgers varsity will play its first full, four-quarter football game Saturday in six weeks.

The Badgers have had full games since beating Jordan Valley on Sept. 28, but the varsity hasnt played all of them. And last weeks district playoff game against Monument-Dayville-Mitchell lasted just a half, with Powder Valley winning 67-14.

Our kids are ready to play a full, four-quarter game, Powder Valley coach Alan Stanfield said.

Powder Valley meets Condon at 1 p.m. Saturday in a Class 1A quarterfinal game in North Powder.

The advantage over Condon, which lost to Powder Valley 44-32 on Sept. 7, may come down to depth.

Condon only plays nine or 10 kids. Ione just about wore them down last week, Stanfield said.

The Badgers have about a dozen players in their main rotation, and that could keep them fresh.

Our whole offensive line, that guard-center-guard combo, doesnt play any defense. We even throw some of our JV kids on special teams, so guys like Brody and Riley arent out there.

Senior Brody Turner has been Powder Valleys main offensive weapon, and senior Riley Martin is another offensive threat. Turner has scored 200 points this year and gained more than 1,800 yards offense.

Turner has scored 32 touchdowns this season, and 14 of them were passes from sophomore quarterback Todd Baxter. Baxter has 25 touchdown passes, six of them to Martin, who is the teams second-leading scorer.

Condon (5-4) runs the offense through quarterback Todd Shafer, who gained 338 yards against the Badgers in the second game of the season.

Their offense is more pass-oriented now instead of run-oriented and (theyre) trying to spread the ball more instead of just (in) Shafers hands, Stanfield said.

Condons offensive change allows Powder Valley to put its faster defenders one-on-one against Condons other players, but if theyre hooking up on fade routes even one out of five times, theyre making pretty good plays on you, Stanfield said.

Powder Valley wants to return to the state championship game, where it lost last year to Dufur.

Weve had a really good week of practice, Stanfield said. Theyre pretty focused in. Theyre determined to take that trip over to the west side and they know that just doesnt happen.
