POWDER VALLEY CAPTURES FIRST GIRLS STATE TRACK TITLE

MONMOUTH — One streak ended and perhaps another one began for the Powder Valley Badgers track and field teams.

The girls won their first state title while the boys had their five-year state champion streak end Saturday with a third-place finish at the OSAA-U.S. Bank Class 1A Track and Field State Championships at Western Oregon University.

"We packed home a blue trophy," Powder Valley coach Doug Lewis said about the championship hardware.

"We didn't end a streak; we just switched sexes."

Thanks to three state titles and 38 points from senior Amanda Bingham, Powder Valley's girls scored 96 points, beating runner-up Ione by 20 points.

Bingham won the long jump with a season-best mark of 16 feet, 9 inches, and then came from behind to win the 400 meters in 1 minute flat.

Fifteen minutes later she raced to second place in the 100 hurdles (17.01), then won the 300 hurdles in 46.96.

"What a great way to go out her senior year," Lewis said.

The state title capped a year in which the Badger girls were second to Cove at the state volleyball tournament and were third at the state basketball tournament.

The Badger boys finished third Saturday behind another solid senior performance, this one from Brody Turner. He won the 400 (50.54) and 800 (1:59.86) but didn't have enough rest time before finishing sixth in the 200 (23.97).

"He needed another five to 10 minutes of rest," Lewis said.

Turner then joined teammates Riley Martin, Cody Taylor and Ryan Browne in defending the school's 1,600 relay state championship.

Cove's girls slipped in and got a fourth-place trophy to go with their state volleyball title and a runner-up finish in basketball. Kathy Mann won the state title in the pole vault with a leap of 9 feet, 4 inches.
