PREP BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Imbler duo leads Panthers past Powder Valley

IMBLER — Eli Bowers and Joe Griffin made sure Imbler didn’t suffer another huge loss to Powder Valley this season.

The Panthers defeated the visiting Badgers 53-49 Saturday in their Old Oregon League boys basketball opener. In the first meeting of the season, Powder Valley cruised to a 77-48 win at the La Grande Optimist Christmas Classic last month.

Bowers scored a team-high 15 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor, while Griffin scored 12 points.

The Panthers fell behind after three quarters, 36-34, but outscored Powder Valley 19-13 in the final quarter. Kyle Johnson added 12 points for the Panthers, while Trace Vancleave finished with 10.

The Badgers struggled from the floor, shooting 20-of-57. Marcus Pratt led the team with 10 points and Brock Jones and Chace Dixon each scored nine points.

Johnson and Griffin helped pace Imbler during a 66-37 win against Wallowa Friday. 

Johnson, a senior, led the Panthers with 14 points, while Griffin scored 12.

Imbler led 27-16 at the half, but blew the game open by outscoring the Cougars 28-11 in the third quarter. Eli Bowers added 10 points for Imbler.

Chandler Burns led Wallowa with 12 points. 

Imbler (11-2 overall) will travel to Pine Eagle for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday. Powder Valley (10-1) will host Joseph at 7:30 p.m. Friday. 

Wallowa falls to Pine Eagle

WALLOWA — Spencer Shelton connected on three 3-point shots, but it wasn’t enough for Wallowa to pick up a win Saturday.

The Cougars boys basketball team lost to Pine Eagle, 46-40, despite 14 points by Shelton. 

Karl Wellens and Chaz Murray each scored eight points for Wallowa. Chandler Burns finished with 10 rebounds.

The Cougars (1-11) will travel to Cove for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday. 

Cove overcomes slow start to beat Joseph

COVE — After beating Mac-Hi Friday night, Cove (8-4 overall) was outscored in the first quarter, 17-10, but rallied to defeat Joseph 54-46 Saturday.

Colton DeMeerleer lead the Leopards with 16 points, connecting on a pair of 3-point shots. Bailey Hill had eight points. 

Erik Hogg lead the Eagles with 16 points, and freshman Cayden DeLury had 12 points. 

Cove goes on to play Wallowa at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at home. Joseph (4-8, 0-1) plays at Powder Valley at 7:30 p.m.

Bobcats maul Enterprise, Elgin over weekend  

ENTERPRISE — The Union boys basketball team came away with a 51-42 win over Enterprise (4-7, 1-5) Saturday, picking up its second conference win of the weekend. 

Kaden Lathrop led the Outlaws with 13 points, while David Ribich had 12 points. 

Enterprise took the lead after the first quarter but Union stormed back in the second, scoring 19 points and taking a 30-22 lead at halftime.

Kenneth Sipp hit four 3-pointers for the Bobcats. Ty Coon scored 14 points, while Johnny Kennon added 12 points.

J.D. Graves led Union to a 72-58 win against Elgin Friday.

Graves scored a team-high 19 points.

Union jumped out to a 17-9 lead after one quarter, and pushed the lead to 15 points, 35-20, at the half. 

Sipp, Coon and Kennon each scored 10 points for Union. 

Gavin Christenson connected on five 3-point shots to finish with 15 points. Stephen Howes scored 12 points, while Gage Little added 10 points. 

Union (7-7, 4-2) will play at Irrigon at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Enterprise will travel to play Grant Union at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Elgin picks up win over Pilot Rock

ELGIN — The Elgin boys basketball team got off to a hot start against Pilot Rock Saturday.

The Huskies pulled ahead by 10 points after one quarter, and coasted to a 57-48 win. 

Jake Burgess finished with a team-high 22 points, while Gavin Christenson scored 12 points. Stephen Howes added nine points.

With the win the Huskies improved to 3-3 in conference play. 

Elgin (5-8) will travel to Heppner for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday.
