UNION — The Powder Valley boys basketball team used a strong third quarter to get by Union in the championship game of the Lions Club Tournament Saturday.
Brock Jones and Quinn Stephens keyed the third quarter run that helped the Badgers pull away. Jones scored seven of his 14 points in the third quarter, while Stephens put in eight of his 15 points.
Senior Marcus Pratt would lead all scorers with 18 points.
Ty Coon tried to keep Union in the game, with 10 of his 17 points in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to help the Bobcats secure a second win this season. Senior Johnny Kennon finished with 12 points, and Chase Houck added eight.
Murchison basket lifts Cove over Crane
UNION — Even though Derrick Murchison was getting busy from behind the 3-point arc, the biggest basket he made came underneath the basket.
Murchison made the crucial shot for the Cove boys basketball team during a 51-49 win against Crane in the consolation bracket of the Union Lions Club Tournament Saturday.
Murchison hit the game winning basket with 4 seconds left in the game, he finished with a team-high 19 points, connecting on three 3-point field goals.
Colton Deemeerleer finished with 18 points, and hit four shots from behind the arc.
Tyler Opie had a game-high 22 points for Crane.
The Leopards will play Union at the Cove Booster Club Tournament at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Badgers cruise past Cove
UNION — Senior leadership paid off for the Powder Valley boys basketball team in the opening game of the Union Lions Club Tournament Friday.
Seniors Marcus Pratt, Tyler Robinson and Logan Allen each scored in double figures during a 70-51 win against Cove.
The Badgers built a 36-20 lead by the half, and pushed the lead out to 57-28 after three quarters.
Pratt finished with a team-high 18 points. Robinson chipped in 16, while Allen scored 15.
Colton Deemeerleer led the way for Cove with 22 points, making four 3-pointers in the game. Derrick Murchison found success behind the arc too, making three, and finishing with 15 points.
Union storms past Crane
UNION — The Union boys basketball team was ready for the basketball season, and got out to a quick start.
Kenneth Sipp got things started with two quick baskets, and the Bobcats cruised to a 65-28 win against Crane Friday at the Union Lions Club Tournament.
Sipp, a senior scored seven of Union’s first nine points, as the Bobcats pulled away to a 19-3 first-quarter lead.
Crane’s second field goal didn’t come until midway through the second quarter, but by then the damage was done, as Union led 25-8.
Sipp finished with a team-high 15 points in the game, connecting on three 3-point field goals. Johnny Kennon scored 13 points, and Chase Houck hit double figures with 10 points.
